“Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation” (Mk. 16: 15). This is the mission Jesus entrusted to his disciples before he returned to his heavenly Father after accomplishing the mission that the Father entrusted to him. Since then, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus has been building his Church with a missionary nature as Pope St. John Paul II and the Second Vatican Council have reiterated. When the time was ripe, the Karnataka-Goa (KG) Province responded to the need of the hour to work in Tanzania in East Africa. The tiny seed that was first planted in 1983 has now grown into a tree that is bearing much fruit, to the great joy and satisfaction of the pioneers of this Carmelite mission. The dedication and hard work of the missionaries has brought a large measure of faith, hope, and love to the people of Tanzania. The continuing growth and success of the mission reached a historic milestone on 16 July 2008, when the Vicariate celebrated 25 years of Carmelite presence in Tanzania. At the request of the late Bishop of the Diocese of Morogoro, the Discalced Carmelite missionaries, as a joint venture of the Indian provinces, reached Tanzania in September 1983. However, this joint venture did not last. In 1992, the mission in Tanzania was fully given over to the KG Province. From our first days in Tanzania, the Carmelite missionaries have made and continue to make a great impact in the fields of pastoral, educational, social, and health ministries. Our contributions to the spiritual and temporal wellbeing of the people we serve are very much appreciated by the bishops in whose dioceses we work. While many other bishops have invited us to serve in their dioceses as well, we can only respond when we have sufficient members for such expansion. Thanks be to God, our membership continues to grow.
