We try to blend profound contemplative spirituality with compassionate service, nurturing souls
and uplifting lives in a holistic expression of faith.
Our Mission

Discalced Carmelites as teachers and powerhouse of prayer in the Church, teach others to be intimate with God.

Our Spirituality

Our Vision

Experience God in the ‘Ordinary events’ of Everyday life

Our Patroness St Therese of the Child Jesus

St. Therese of Lisieux, born in 1873 in Alençon, France, entered the Carmelite monastery at the age of 15 and lived as a cloistered nun. Despite her brief life, she left a profound impact through her spirituality and writings. Her "Little Way" teaching, centered on performing small acts of love with great devotion, became a guiding principle for achieving holiness. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 24 in 1897 and was canonized in 1925. Her writings, especially "Story of a Soul," have influenced countless individuals in their spiritual journeys, making her a beloved saint known for her humility, simplicity, and devotion to God.

In taking St. Therese of Lisieux as the patroness of the Tanzanian Regional Vicariate, the Discalced Carmelites, try to imitate their sister in Carmel in living their religious consecration to God. Her teachings of the "Little Way" resonate with the Carmelites' commitment to contemplative spirituality and compassionate service, guiding their mission to uplift and empower the lives of the Tanzanian people. As their patroness, St. Therese's life and teachings inspire the Discalced Carmelites in Tanzania to embrace simplicity, devotion, and a heartfelt dedication to both prayerful reflection and active outreach to the people, through both spiritual and humanitarian ministry.

REGIONAL

From Vicar's Desk

This year marks a momentous milestone as we gather virtually to celebrate the Ruby Jubilee of Discalced Carmelite presence in Tanzania. A Ruby Jubilee celebration is a significant milestone: it marks 40 years of our existence in Tanzania. The term “Ruby Jubilee” is used to describe the 40th anniversary. Ruby is a precious gemstone which reminds us of the sacrifices, the selfless service, and the hard work expended throughout these 40 years of the Vicariate's journey.

Forty years ago, a small seed of Carmelite spirituality was planted in this fertile Tanzanian soil. Through unwavering dedication, shared sacrifice, and the grace of God, that seed has blossomed into a vibrant community deeply rooted in prayer, contemplation, and selfless service. As we look back on these four decades, we are humbled by the remarkable journey we have embarked upon, the lives transformed, and the bonds of love and faith that have been nurtured. The Discalced Carmelites have always been drawn to the contemplative life, to seeking the Divine Presence in the midst of the ordinary. Our journey in Tanzania has been a testament to this calling. From the solitude of prayer to the active engagement in ministries that uplift and support the marginalized, we have striven to embody the teachings of our Carmelite heritage.

As we stand on the threshold of this Ruby Jubilee, we are reminded that this milestone is not just about the passage of time; it is a celebration of God's faithfulness, of the countless hands that have worked tirelessly, and of the countless hearts that have been touched. It is an occasion to renew our commitment to serve, to deepen our contemplative roots, and to spread the flame of Carmelite spirituality even farther and wider.

In this digital age, as we connect virtually and share our stories through this platform, let us remember that our true connection lies in the bond of our shared faith and the love that unites us across distances. Let this website be a beacon of light, a place of inspiration, and a means to strengthen our ties. With immense gratitude for the past, with a fervent dedication to the present, and with a hopeful gaze towards the future, let us march onward, carrying the torch of Carmel's contemplative spirit. May the example of Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross continue to guide us, and may the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel protect us always.

JOURNEY OF GRACE

Voices from the Touched Hearts

Inspiring Stories of lives touched healed, and uplifted through the instrumentality of Discalced Carmelites in Tanzania.

Michael

Through their spiritual guidance and example, the Carmelites have taught me the transformative power of silence and prayer. Their emphasis on deepening one’s relationship with God through contemplative practices has had a profound impact on my own spiritual journey. They have shown me that in the midst of life’s busyness, there is a sacred space for quiet reflection and communion with the Divine.

The Carmelites’ dedication to service and their mission to reach out to those in need have also left an indelible mark on my heart. Their selfless acts of kindness, whether through providing education, contributing to the field of healthcare, or simply being a listening ear, have touched the lives of many and have inspired me to follow their example in serving others.
